Abstract

The emergence of social media in the modern digital era has changed how individuals interact with one another, particularly how they communicate with those close to them. A wide range of application platforms has been created by developers to allow people to communicate with one another, particularly young adults, who make up the greatest segment of social media users. However, there is a connection between social media use and psychological well-being, which has been shown to increase loneliness and low self-esteem in people. This study employed a quantitative descriptive methodology to obtain thorough information on the differences in loneliness and self-esteem between young adult men and women who use social media. The research sample was selected through purposive sampling. 100 men and 100 women between the ages of 18 and 29 made up the 200 subjects in this study. The degree of difference between loneliness and self-esteem was assessed using t-test. The findings indicated that young adult men and women who used social media experienced different levels of loneliness and self-esteem. Men had higher levels of loneliness and lower levels of self-esteem than women, as shown by the value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.01), which shows that there is a very significant difference between the two.
